TARAgram is the e-commerce initiative of Technology and Action for Rural Advancement (TARA), a social enterprise under the Development Alternatives Group, that has the  mission to achieve innovative green technologies and socially equitable solutions, creating sustainable impact across India and beyond. TARAgram, as a natural evolution of this mission, brings artisans’ products to a global audience, by providing a platform to showcase and sell their eco-friendly, handmade products crafted from 100% recycled and upcycled materials.

About the founder

(Dr. Ashok Khosla, Chairman)

Dr. Ashok Khosla, Chairman of Development Alternatives (DA) Group, is a global pioneer in sustainable development and social enterprise. In 1982, he founded DA—one of the world’s first civil society organizations using business-based approaches to tackle poverty and environmental challenges.

Under his leadership, the DA Group—including social enterprise TARA and the TARAgram e-commerce platform—has empowered millions across India with sustainable livelihoods and eco-friendly innovations.

Globally, Dr. Khosla has held key positions such as President of IUCN, Co-President of the Club of Rome, and Co-Chair of the UNEP Resource Panel. He was Special Advisor to the Brundtland Commission, chaired the 1992 NGO Forum at the Rio Earth Summit, and served on boards including SEI, IISD, and the Toyota Environmental Awards.

In India, he helped establish the country’s first environmental agency under PM Indira Gandhi, designed Harvard’s first environmental course (1965), and contributed to major national boards on security, environment, and science.

Through TARAgram, his vision continues—enabling artisans, promoting eco-friendly products, and building a future rooted in sustainability and equity.

Our Approach

Our commitment to sustainability starts with sourcing.  Resources are carefully selected from natural, renewable materials, such as recycled paper for our stationery, organic cotton and jute for textiles, and biodegradable materials. Each product is made with minimal environmental impact, creating items that are beautiful, functional, and safe - for you and for the planet.
